What it is A BBQ hut is a covered, ventilated outdoor cooking and dining space, typically hexagonal or square with a central grill area, wrap-around bench seating and a chimney flue. It's a proper timber building with a roof, not a shelter with a barbecue in it. Who it's for Families who use their garden year-round and are tired of scrapping dinner plans every time the forecast turns. Property owners with hospitality use, small holiday lets, self-catering cottages, glamping sites, who want to offer a covered outdoor experience. When you need it When the pattern is 'plan a barbecue, cancel the barbecue, order pizza' more often than you'd like. A BBQ hut turns that from a fair-weather event into something you can genuinely book in for a wet Wednesday in November. Why it matters A cheap flat-packed hut, thrown up on a slab with no thought given to flue clearances or bench spacing, becomes a smoky, uncomfortable, damp box that no one wants to sit in. Outdoor buildings sit outside in Scottish weather for 20+ years. The mistakes below are the ones we're most often called in to fix. ### Poor flue and ventilation Get the flue routing or ventilation wrong and the hut fills with smoke every time you cook. Guests leave with stinging eyes and clothes that smell for a week. Fixing it after installation means opening the roof up. ### Wrong-size grill for the space Central grills that are too large for the hut make the bench seating unusable, anyone within a metre gets cooked before the food does. In detail ## The specification, materials and options. ### Hut sizes & seating BBQ huts are typically hexagonal (6-sided) or square with wrap-around bench seating. A small hut seats 4–6, a medium 8–10, and larger commercial-use huts 12+. Seating layout is fixed benches around the walls, with the grill in the centre for even access. Sizing is driven by how many people you routinely want to seat, plus a bit of headroom, you don't want to build for exactly 8 and always end up crammed in with 9. ### Grill, flue & ventilation Central grills are typically cast iron or steel, with a spinning grill plate that lets you cook without leaning across hot coals. Flue routing needs planned clearance from combustible materials in the roof, and the correct flue diameter for the grill size, get it wrong and the hut fills with smoke. Passive ventilation through eaves and adjustable vents keeps air moving without creating a draught on cold nights. ### Construction & materials Walls are typically 44mm+ interlocking log or timber-frame with clad exterior. Roofs are pitched with felt shingles or EPDM, engineered around the flue penetration. Internal timber is left natural and hand-finished, a treated hardwood bench and floor stand up to decades of use. ### Residential vs commercial use Residential BBQ huts are the most common, a family use one for six adults, a few times a month. Commercial builds (small holiday lets, glamping sites, self-catering) get harder use and typically need a heavier-spec grill, more robust seating, and consideration of building control depending on scale. For commercial installs we handle the specification and any relevant regulatory paperwork as part of the project. ### Options & extras Optional add-ons include integrated lighting on a dedicated circuit, USB and 240V sockets, a rear service door for bringing food and drink in, and external lighting under the eaves.
