Composite decking is a low-maintenance alternative to timber decking, engineered wood-plastic composite boards fixed to a properly-engineered timber sub-frame. Composite doesn't need annual staining or sealing, doesn't splinter, and doesn't rot.

When the existing timber deck is on its last legs, when a new garden room or hot tub needs a proper surface around it, or when the current garden is scrappy grass and you want a genuine outdoor room.
Composite boards installed onto a bad sub-frame still fail, they sag, drain badly, and stain in patches. The sub-frame is where most of the durability lives, and it's the bit most contractors under-invest in.

Cheap sub-frame under premium boards
Spending on top-tier composite boards and cheaping out on the sub-frame is the most common decking mistake. The boards outlast the frame by decades and the whole deck fails from the bottom up.
No drainage
Decks laid without correct spacing and slope trap water, breed algae, and turn slippery within a season. Drainage is a design decision, not an install-day accident.
Composite over grass with no ventilation
A ground-hugging deck with no airflow underneath grows mould, warps and stinks after one wet winter. Ventilation gaps are non-negotiable.

The specification, materials and options.
Composite boards
Composite decking is a mix of wood fibre and recycled plastic, produced in solid or hollow-core boards depending on manufacturer. Higher-end capped composites have a hard polymer surface that resists staining and UV fading significantly better than early-generation composites.
Boards come in a range of colours and finishes, from grey and dark charcoal through to warmer wood-toned finishes.
Sub-frame, the bit that matters
Sub-frames are built from pressure-treated softwood or, for higher-spec projects, aluminium. Joist spacing is set by the specific board manufacturer's requirements, get it wrong and boards deflect and creak.
The sub-frame is supported off engineered pads or ground screws, correctly levelled and drained. This is where most of the difference between a 20-year deck and a 5-year deck lives.
Drainage & ventilation
Boards are laid with a specified gap for drainage and thermal movement, under-gapped decks pool water and warp, over-gapped decks look loose. The sub-frame is set with a slight slope so water sheds cleanly.
The void under the deck is ventilated so air moves and moisture doesn't sit. This is essential in a Scottish climate.
Steps, edges & balustrading
Deck edges are finished with matched trims and fascia so no board ends or sub-frame are visible. Steps are built as continuations of the deck rather than bolted on afterwards, so nothing looks or feels tacked on.
Balustrading is available in composite, timber or metal to suit the design.
Integration with garden rooms, hot tubs and kitchens
The most common deck installs sit around a garden room, under a hot tub, or as a base for an outdoor kitchen. Each of these has specific structural or drainage considerations.
Hot tub decks in particular need heavy-duty structural sub-frames engineered for the filled weight of the tub, a standard deck spec is not enough.
Care & longevity
Composite decking is genuinely low-maintenance, a wash with soapy water once or twice a year is usually all it needs. Boards may fade slightly in the first year as they weather.
A well-installed composite deck should hold up for 20+ years without significant intervention.
