What it is A permanent, fully insulated outdoor building specified for training: dedicated power circuit, lighting, a heat source and glazing sized for the elevation. Floor, walls and roof are insulated for a Scottish winter. The mistakes below are the ones we're most often called in to fix. ### Summerhouse spec sold as a gym Thin-wall cabins feel fine in June and unusable by November. Condensation, cold floors and mould follow within one winter. We're regularly called in to strip out and replace builds mis-sold two years earlier. ### Undersized electrics Running heating, lighting, a treadmill or a bike off a single 13A extension lead trips breakers, damages kit and, at worst, becomes a fire risk. Every Signature build is wired properly, on its own consumer unit feed. ### Poor base preparation A gym sitting on paving slabs or a hastily poured slab twists, drops and pulls doors out of true within a season. In detail ## The specification, materials and options. ### Construction & insulation Every Signature garden gym is built on a fully insulated timber-frame system. Floor, walls and roof are insulated as standard, with a breathable membrane and vapour control layer engineered for the Scottish climate. That means no cold-bridging at junctions and no damp build-up behind plasterboard. Internally we finish with plasterboard and skim as standard, so the room feels like part of your house rather than a shed with a light in it. ### Electrics, heating & connectivity All electrical work is completed by our qualified electrician, on a dedicated feed from your consumer unit. Every room includes lighting, sockets and a heat source, typically a wall-mounted electric radiator or an air-conditioning unit with heating mode. Data cabling, external lighting, exterior sockets and EV-charging point provision are all common add-ons and are best specified at survey stage so cabling can be routed cleanly. ### Layout considerations for a home gym Home gyms are a regular use-case for us. Every layout is worked through with you at survey stage, so glazing, doors and power land in the right places for how you'll actually train. ### Planning permission The majority of garden gyms fall under permitted development in Scotland and don't require a planning application. Restrictions apply for listed buildings, conservation areas, and larger structures close to boundaries. We advise on your specific site as part of the design process and can submit a planning application on your behalf if one is needed.
