Overview

The essentials, in plain English.

What it is

A log cabin is a solid-timber outdoor building, traditional interlocking log construction, typically single-glazed or double-glazed depending on spec, with a pitched roof and a hard-wearing timber floor. Cabins suit garden hobby spaces, workshops, holiday-use retreats and standalone garden buildings.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want the character of a real log building rather than a modern clad frame, gardeners needing a proper workshop, hobbyists wanting a dedicated space, and property owners looking for a lower-cost alternative to a fully-insulated garden room.

When you need it

When you want traditional timber character, when the budget won't stretch to a fully-insulated garden room, or when the use is seasonal or intermittent, hobby workshop, summer studio, spare-space overflow.

Why it matters

A cabin sold cheap and installed carelessly warps, leaks and loses its doors within two winters. Interlocking log construction only performs when the base is level, the logs are dry, and the roof is properly sealed. That's where our install experience matters most.

What goes wrong

The cost of getting this wrong.

Outdoor buildings sit outside in Scottish weather for 20+ years. The mistakes below are the ones we're most often called in to fix.

Kit cabins self-installed by hand

The cabin arrives on a pallet, a friend helps put it up, and by the second winter the logs have shrunk unevenly, doors won't close, and the felt roof has lifted. We install cabins for homeowners weekly who tried the kit route and now need it corrected.

No base | or the wrong base

Cabins on slabs, on grass, or on a base that isn't square drop and twist. Once the logs are out of alignment the whole shell fights itself. A prepared, level base is not optional.

Under-spec'd doors and windows

Cheap single-glazed hinged windows in a coastal Scottish garden let water in within a season. We fit premium door and window options that are engineered for weather, not photographed for a brochure.

How we work

A process built for premium results.

The same process runs on every project, from a £640 shed to a £45,000 garden room, so nothing slips and every customer knows what happens next.

In detail

The specification, materials and options.

Log construction & timber

Traditional log cabins use interlocking machined logs of varying thickness, typically 28mm, 44mm, 58mm or 70mm for standard cabins, and heavier profiles for residential-grade builds. Thicker logs mean better thermal performance, better acoustic performance, and better resistance to twisting and warping.

Timber species is typically slow-grown Nordic spruce or pine. For coastal Scottish sites we'll usually recommend a thicker log spec and a full pre-install treatment schedule.

Doors, windows & glazing

Standard cabin kits ship with single-glazed windows and lightweight door hardware. For our installs we specify upgraded double-glazing and heavier-weight doors as standard, this is a large part of the price difference between a cheap catalogue cabin and a Signature-installed one.

Glazing options include Georgian bar detailing, full-length picture windows and stable-style split doors for workshop use.

Roof, floor & foundations

Roofs are pitched as standard, with felt shingles, EPDM or metal roofing options depending on the aesthetic you're after. Floors are tongue-and-groove timber laid over insulated joists.

The base is the make-or-break element. Depending on ground we specify a concrete pad, a paved base with damp-proof membrane, or a raised timber platform. We won't install a cabin on a base we haven't prepared or personally inspected.

Electrics & optional add-ons

Standard log cabin prices do not include electrics. Power, lighting, sockets and heating can be added on quote and are fitted by our qualified electrician on a dedicated feed from your consumer unit.

Common add-ons include a wall-mounted electric radiator, external lighting, a hard-wired internet feed and a workshop extractor point.

Residential-grade & larger builds

At the top end of our range, up to £100,000, cabins are heavy-log, fully-insulated, plumbed and wired to residential standards, suitable for holiday-let use or long-term guest accommodation. These builds are priced individually on survey.

For residential use we handle site-specific planning advice, drainage and any building control requirements as part of the project.

Ongoing care

Timber cabins need re-treating every 2–4 years depending on exposure. We recommend a specific treatment schedule at handover and can arrange the first re-treat if you'd prefer not to do it yourself.

Movement is normal in the first winter as the logs settle. Doors and windows sometimes need a minor adjustment 6–12 months in, which we handle at no cost on cabins we've installed.
