Overview

The essentials, in plain English.

What it is

A built-in outdoor cooking and entertaining area, typically combining a grill or wood-fired oven, prep surfaces, storage and often a covered structure to keep it useable in rain. Not a barbecue on wheels, a proper piece of garden architecture.

Who it's for

Homeowners who cook outside more than a couple of times a year, hosts who want to prep and cook without disappearing back into the kitchen mid-conversation, and clients specifying a full outdoor entertaining area with deck, seating and cover.

When you need it

When the current setup, a wheelie barbecue and a plastic table, has stopped meeting the way you actually entertain. When you want the option to cook outside on a Wednesday in October, not just at a Saturday summer party.

Why it matters

An outdoor kitchen exposed to Scottish weather without proper cover, ventilation and drainage becomes unusable within a season. Appliances corrode, worktops stain, and the whole feature ends up under a tarpaulin.

What goes wrong

The cost of getting this wrong.

Outdoor buildings sit outside in Scottish weather for 20+ years. The mistakes below are the ones we're most often called in to fix.

No cover | no use

An outdoor kitchen with no roof gets used the six weekends of summer we get and forgotten the rest of the year. Cover doubles or triples usage without changing anything else.

Cheap materials outdoors

Indoor-grade cabinetry and worktops installed outside swell, delaminate and stain inside a year. Everything specified for outdoor use has to be actually suitable, not indoor kit re-badged.

Ventilation and flue as an afterthought

Covered outdoor kitchens with the wrong ventilation trap smoke and heat exactly where the cook stands. Ventilation is a design decision, not an install-day fix.

How we work

A process built for premium results.

The same process runs on every project, from a £640 shed to a £45,000 garden room, so nothing slips and every customer knows what happens next.

  1. 01

    Enquiry & scoping

Call to talk through how you cook, how many people you entertain, and what your garden allows.

  2. 02

    Site survey

We visit to look at siting, orientation, existing services (gas, water, power) and how the kitchen fits with the rest of the garden.

  3. 03

    Design

Bespoke layout showing footprint, appliance positions, worktop runs, storage and any covered structure.

  4. 04

    Quotation

Itemised quote covering structure, cabinetry, worktops, appliances, install and any groundwork or services.

  5. 05

    Build & install

Structure, cabinetry and services installed by our team. Appliances commissioned and tested.

  6. 06

    Handover

We walk you through operation, safe first-use and long-term care.

Coordinated with garden rooms & decking

Where the kitchen is part of a bigger outdoor project we build the whole scheme together.

Fully insured

£5m public liability, £5m employers liability across every install.

In detail

The specification, materials and options.

Cooking appliances

Options include gas grills, charcoal or wood-fired grills, pizza ovens, side burners and smokers. The right combination depends on how you actually cook, a family that lives on burgers has different needs from someone who runs slow-cooked briskets on Sundays.

Appliances need to be outdoor-rated and correctly ventilated when housed under cover.

Structure & cover

Cover options range from a simple pergola with a rain-shedding cover, through to a fully framed roof structure integrated with a garden room or decking scheme.

Full cover is the single biggest factor in how much use an outdoor kitchen actually gets in a Scottish garden.

Cabinetry & worktops

Cabinetry is specified in materials suitable for continuous outdoor exposure, treated hardwood, marine ply, stainless steel or purpose-designed outdoor cabinet systems.

Worktops are typically granite, stainless steel or purpose-designed outdoor composite. Indoor-grade laminate or engineered stone does not survive outdoor Scottish conditions.

Services, gas, water, power

Gas grills can be either bottled LPG or piped natural gas, piped gas requires a qualified gas engineer for the connection. Power for lighting, side appliances and any refrigeration is on a dedicated outdoor-rated circuit installed by our qualified electrician.

Water and drainage for a sink can be run where feasible, this is often a large step up in kitchen usability but does add cost and complexity.

Integration with garden rooms & decking

Where the kitchen is part of a bigger project, we design it alongside the garden room, deck and any seating area. That gives you a coherent outdoor space rather than three disconnected features.

A common layout is a garden room with a covered outdoor kitchen on one side and a composite deck connecting them.

Winter shutdown & maintenance

Gas and water services need appropriate winter shutdown to avoid frost damage. Appliances need cleaning and covering. Timber and cabinetry need periodic re-treating.

We provide a specific maintenance schedule at handover and can arrange annual servicing.
