When you're planning a serious garden upgrade rather than picking up an inflatable hot tub from a big-box retailer. A fixed sauna or hot tub is a base-in-the-ground, dedicated-electrics decision, worth doing once, properly.
The reason most hot tubs and saunas underperform isn't the unit itself. It's the base underneath, the electrical supply feeding them, and the surrounding environment. A hot tub on an unlevel base or a sauna on an under-spec'd electrical feed is a warranty problem waiting to happen.
What goes wrong

Outdoor buildings sit outside in Scottish weather for 20+ years. The mistakes below are the ones we're most often called in to fix.
Hot tub on the wrong base
A filled hot tub weighs upwards of a tonne. Set it on decking that isn't engineered for the load and the whole platform sags. Set it on unlevel ground and the shell distorts and voids the warranty.
Under-spec'd electrical supply
Hot tubs and electric saunas draw heavy current. A supply that isn't dedicated, isn't correctly rated, or isn't RCD-protected trips, damages the unit, or becomes a safety issue.
No thought to housing or shelter
A sauna installed with no changing space, or a hot tub with no covered access, gets used far less than it could. Cold Scottish rain between the back door and the tub is a use-killer.

The specification, materials and options.
Sauna types & options
Traditional saunas use a heater, electric or wood-burning, with rocks that steam is created from. Infrared saunas use radiant panels and warm the body directly at lower ambient temperatures.
Freestanding saunas can be positioned inside a garden room, in a purpose-built sauna hut, or against a house wall. The right choice depends on how you'll use it and how it fits with the rest of the garden.
Hot tub options
Hot tubs range from smaller 2–4 person units to larger 6–8 person tubs with more jets, higher pumps and greater energy demand. Larger tubs have higher electrical requirements and heavier base loads.
Wood-fired hot tubs are also available and don't need mains electrics for heating, though they still need thoughtful siting for the flue and safe access.
Base preparation
Filled hot tubs commonly weigh 1,000–2,000 kg or more. The base has to be engineered for that load. Options include a reinforced concrete pad, a heavy-duty structural deck or a paved sub-base, all sized and specified for the specific unit.
Saunas are lighter but still need a level, dry base with a proper vapour barrier.
Electrical supply
Hot tubs and electric saunas need a dedicated electrical circuit sized for the specific unit, commonly 32A or higher, with correct RCD protection. Feeding them off an existing socket or a shared circuit is a warranty problem and a safety issue.
All electrical work is done by our qualified electrician on a dedicated feed from your consumer unit.
Siting, shelter & access
Hot tubs get used far more when there's covered access from the house, somewhere warm to change, and a bit of privacy from neighbours. Pergolas, gazebos, garden rooms and sauna huts all help.
Saunas are typically sited close to a shower or plunge area, that combination is where the real benefit sits.
Maintenance & running cost
Hot tubs need weekly water treatment, filter cleaning and periodic drain-and-refill cycles. Running cost is dominated by heating, insulated covers and well-sited units make a significant difference.
Saunas are lower-maintenance but the timber interior needs periodic cleaning and re-oiling.
