Barrel Saunas
Jonas Teak.Built for Scottish winters.
The mid-sized Jonas barrel in warm teak-oiled thermowood, installed and photographed through a Scottish snow winter to prove the finish holds up.
Overview
Jonas Teak Barrel Sauna.
The Jonas Teak barrel is the model we photograph most often in the depths of a Scottish winter, because the whole point of a garden sauna is that it works when the weather turns, and honey-toned thermowood photographs beautifully against snow.
It's the mid-size Jonas, larger inside than the S, more compact than the Grand, comfortably seating four to five adults on twin-tier hemlock benches, with the same panoramic glass end wall you get on the flagship.
Exterior is thermally-modified spruce with a saturating Danish teak oil finish. Interior is knot-free western hemlock. Heater is a Harvia 8kW electric, sized precisely to the internal volume for a 25-minute cold-to-soak warm-up.

Living with it
How it actually works day to day.
Thermowood is a genuine cold-climate material. The kiln modification process bakes out the moisture and resins that make untreated softwood swell, split and rot, leaving a timber that's dimensionally stable to -30°C and doesn't need annual sealant coats.
In real Scottish winter use, this matters. Owners report zero movement in door frames, no ice-cracking around the glass, and a sauna that reaches soaking temperature in the same 25 minutes at -5°C as it does at +20°C.
Teak oil is a maintenance choice, not a structural requirement. Re-oil every 2 seasons for the warm tone, or leave it and let the timber silver, both are fine. We supply the correct oil at handover and demonstrate application.

- Holiday lets and short-stays where the sauna is photographed year-round
Real installations
Jonas Teak in Scottish gardens.
Every photograph on this page is a genuine Signature Garden Rooms installation.
Very well. Kiln modification bakes moisture and resins out of the timber, leaving it dimensionally stable down to -30°C. We temperature-cycle every unit before dispatch and have installs on the Fife coast and in Perthshire that have been through six winters without measurable movement.
